Skin cancer is typically of 3 main types, although there are some rare variants.
Basal cell is the most common type of skin cancer. In fact it is the most common of any cancer. Risk factors are well described and include:
- Sun exposure, especially in the mid-day sun and tanning beds, which has close to the same risk.
- Bad sunburns, especially in childhood and adolescence
- Fair skin
- Age - the older you are the more likely to have basal cell. However it can occur at any age
